Homeowners are having problems with their home insurance policies in Florida when it comes to damage caused by sinkholes. In a typical case, the foundation or walls may be cracked, and water may be leaking into a home. But some insurers in the state are contending that this sort of damage caused by a sinkhole is not structural damage, and they are refusing to pay.
There have been thousands of unpaid claims and denial letters piling up around the state, as the insurance industry is declaring itself to be the victim of an epidemic of sinkhole fraud. The Florida Legislature is now considering a bill that is backed by the industry to stop this apparent fraud. However, there are records which the industry wants hidden that suggest a legitimate basis for most sinkhole claims.
